Saddle Brook Police Department
Prior to 1942 the Township of Saddle River (as it was called) was patrolled by a volunteer force of special officers. On March 13, 1942 the Township Council passed an ordinance that established the official Saddle River Township Police Department which was made up of two sworn officers. In 1943, two (2) more officers were added to bring the total to four. The first police headquarters was housed in the rear of the firehouse located on Saddle River Road near Railroad Avenue. The current headquarters at 63 Market Street was opened on March 8, 2006.
Chief Robert J. Kugler leads a department that at one time was made up of as many as 34 officers. Currently the roster has 26 active officers. In addition to the full time officers the department also includes nine (9) Class 1b Special Police officers (unarmed), 2 civilian dispatchers and a civilian records clerk. The police department also supervises the school crossing guards.
